History: Celestia’s Wiki | Game wiki | Game wiki 2 | Let’s Play
Personality:
Celestia lives a life of high stakes, or so it would seem that way from her ‘Super High-school Level’ title, ‘Gambler’. Despite her title, gambling really isn’t quite such a difficult feat for her as it would be for anyone normal. She was born blessed with with the skills for gambling, and has never lost a bet. This even includes during games such as shogi that she says she is not familiar with. Yet, that is the point that must be noted: that Celestia ‘says’ it is so, does not necessarily mean it is true. The biggest point of her personality is that she is a fabulous liar. She is in control of her emotions, but also on top of that she can manipulate them to fool others.
Of course, this is part of the reason as to why she is so good at gambling. Keeping a calm composure in the most difficult of circumstances, or the opposite, pretending to be affected when she is barely bothered by a situation. She constantly tells the others that the only way they’ll survive is to ‘adapt’ to the situation - she even says this with a gentle smile on her face; however, this is also a lie. When the truth comes out later she tells the others who would be able to adapt to a situation like this? Being stuck with the people she has been stuck with, and that she hated every moment of it. As beautiful as she may appear, and as elegant, the truth is that she is a lot like a rose. She may look like a doll, but she has thorns.
Celestia’s biggest lie in game is during the third chapter, during her own plot to commit murder. She tricks Yamada into becoming an accomplice with her, tells him to kill Ishida and that she will kill someone while the others are distracted. Sadly for Yamada, Celestia kills him without mercy, leaving two dead because of her plot. For this case she pretends to be injured due to ‘Justice Robo’, a costumed designed to frame Hagakure for the crimes. She tricks the others to follow a wild goose chase around the school, making sure both Yamada’s and Ishimaru’s bodies are both found at the same time so Monobear’s message is said when three people find Yamada faking his death. She’s manipulative to a fault, and used Yamada and Ishimaru’s connection to ‘Alter Ego’, a program designed by Chihiro, to her advantage. She stole the laptop for this (the laptop that everyone put their hopes into), lied and said Ishimaru forced her through violence and blackmail, and set Yamada on him. The supplementary manga (chapter 5) shows her feelings on this in more detail, where her three ‘pawns’ are represented as puppets she bends to her own will.
Overall, it is an elaborate plot, spun by an incredible liar.
And the motive for this chapter? `Desire` Money. Something that Celestia is rather fond of.
Likewise, her lies can sometimes be used for simple (albeit dark) comedy. During the last ‘free time’ skit with her, she tells Naegi that she has an announcement to make: “I’m carrying your baby. Oops, sorry, I got that wrong.” Not only this but she also tells Naegi that she ‘ranks’ certain people around her to be at different friendship levels. In this skit she tells Naegi he has made ‘rank C’ but the most important part of it is when she describes what happens if someone becomes ‘rank F’: “...I use my connections and hire someone to assassinate them. I can't allow such people to even exist.” When it comes to friendships and enemies, Celestia’s lies become much more guarded. It becomes much more difficult to understand when she is lying or telling the truth, and it’s no wonder Naegi ends up so confused at her summaries of her ‘rankings’. She insists he considers being one of her ‘knights’ and tells him that he may even reach ‘rank A’ one day, but on the other hand, there is a certain air to the way she tells him this that makes the situation one to be wary of.
One thing Celestia prides herself on is elegance. Her so called ‘dream’ (whether this is actually true, or false, is up for speculation) is to save enough money so she can afford to buy a castle and have butlers/servants dressed as vampires. In fact, when her execution is first revealed to be burned at the stake, she actually looked content. It’s something out of a renaissance, something with style and class to it - especially to a girl who enjoys dressing in lolita clothing, wearing clip on curly pigtails and a hinged ring that covers 2/3’s of her index finger. (Of course, that is not her final punishment, much to her horror when a fire truck comes crashing into her...)
This elegance, however, also leads her to being a bit like a spoiled child. She has worked hard to gain the savings she has, even if it is through something such as gambling, so she can expect people to wait on her. This is shown with Yamada when she tells him to make her Royal Milk Tea. It’s a tea brewed in a certain way with the milk added ahead of time and to her the scent is much more appealing than tea ‘seasoned’ with milk. When Yamada makes the tea not to her taste, she throws the cup (after a soft ‘...oh my’) and politely gives a reasoning as to why the tea isn’t to her standards. After Yamada keeps resisting, her usual calm demeanor fades - she yells ‘Just hurry the fuck up and get me my tea, pig boy!!!’ at him. This aggressive, insulting demeanor tends to show itself whenever she doesn’t get her own way.
Celestia can also be seen as ‘Miss Captain Obvious’ sometimes as well. In the first chapter after they investigate the school, she smiles and points out that there is one thing that has made their search prove fruitful, and that ‘The fact we are locked in a closed environment with nowhere to escape to is the confirmed, unavoidable truth.’ However she feels on the inside is calmly covered with a smile, and she even allows a small ‘hee hee’ at everyone’s reactions to this alarming development. It is also her who proposes the ‘Night Time Rule’ where they do not go outside their rooms at night, just to ensure safety. It’s a rule to squash paranoia, though as it is only a rule between them, there is no way to enforce it. Rather, it is a logical suggestion, something that fits a character such as Celestia.
There is one thing, however, that Celestia hates and refuses to come into being: losing. In chapter two in the library after they find Byakuya Togami reading there, and find how he considers this Mutual Game of Killing an actual game, she states: “I’m just the same as you. A game is something to be won. I feel the same.” This is true to her personality and perhaps reveals more about her actual position on their current situation. It’s why she doesn’t mind taking the chance - the gamble - by taking someone’s life to step ahead. During the game we hear her story (and whether it is just a story or not, is another thing) where she was involved in a gaming tournament called “The King of Liars”. She had tea spilt on her dress during the break, and was absolutely ruthless against the other two left in the competition. She won in a rush just so she could get her dress cleaned. She destroyed two people’s bank accounts in one swift strike, just so she could get to a launderette faster. She’s merciless and ruthless when she wants to be, she just needs the motivation and reasoning for it.
